since their first publication in 1947, raymond queneaus’ ‹style exercises›, or ‹exercises de style› in the original french version, have been regarded as one of the most original works in the field of rhetoric and linguistic experiments. Using precisely 99 variations, the author tells one and the same story about a commonplace incident that took place in a paris bus.

the designed newspaper is aimed at enabling the reader to experience style exercises in a novel manner involving a graphic interpretation of the text. using typographical highlighting, plot-structure connections became visible, revealing previously concealed interpretations of the work.

the picture material refers to where the incident occurred and the time when the thext was first appeared. the chosen medium newspaper is a return to the original medium, as the various versions of the story also originally appeared in newspapers and magazines.

made as graduation project at the hgk basel.
